There are more events in France in June this year than the last few years. Everyone is enjoying the new freedom. And added to that are the glorious June parks and gardens. All the museums and attractions are open with many offering special outdoor events. As every year, events commemorate the June 6th D-Day Landings in Normandy.

To Jun 5, 2022: Roland Garros in Paris is one of the 4 major international Grand Slam tennis tournaments. It began in 1925 and today takes place on 20 clay courts. Each match is five sets long with no deciding game in the last set. There are two major awards: the Musketeers’ Cup for men and the Suzanne Lenglen cup for women. The womens’ cup is rightly named after the great tennis player who was one of the early famous women wearing one of the bras invented in 1889 by Herminie Cadolle. There are also trophies for the winners of the men’s doubles, ladies’ doubles and mixed doubles.
To Jun 12, 2022: D-Day Commemorated. Each year, between late May and mid-June, the D-Day landing beaches host events commemorating the events. There’s a full programme with guided walks, historical re-enactments, exhibitions, fireworks, parachute drops in period costume, tours of the installation and bunkers, military vehicle parades, concerts and more. All in tribute to the Allied soldiers who liberated France on 6 June 1944.
The towns taking part are: Bayeux, Longues-sur-Mer, Arromanches, Sainte-Mère-Église, Carentan, Utah, Isigny-sur-Mer and Omaha.

To Jul 3, 2022: Saint-Denis Festival has been putting on fabulous classical music concerts and recitals in Saint-Denis since 1970. Performances are in the basilica of Saint-Denis and the House of Education of the Legion d’Honneur. French and international orchestras bring Mozart, Schubert and modern works to life. Some concerts are broadcast on a giant screen in front of the basilica.
To Jul 31, 2022: Saint-Etienne Design Festival. Since 1998, the city of Saint-Étienne in the Auvergne has hosted the International Design Biennial. Organised by the Saint-Étienne Regional School of Fine Arts in this interesting industrial city, it promotes contemporary design through seven exhibitions and events. The theme this year is ‘Bifurcation’. Saint-Etienne is the only French city designated as a UNESCO-listed Creative City of Design, joining Berlin, Bilbao, Montreal and Beijing. Exhibitions throughout the city, workshops, conferences and meetings with design professionals make up an exciting programme.

To Nov 6, 2022: International Garden Festival at Chaumont-sur-Loire château in the Loire Valley celebrates its 30th anniversary. This festival which is equivalent in prestige to the Chelsea Flower Show is not to be missed. The château and grounds are lovely and the festival shows off a series of gardens from international designers. The theme this year is the Ideal Garden: designers have created gardens which aim to satisfy the following criteria. It must be beautiful, good, organic, healing, comforting, innovative, and water and energy efficient all at the same time. In addition it must glorify harmony and taste, and generate wellbeing and happiness. The French really do put the bar high don’t they?
To Jan 14, 2023: Chartres en lumières sees this wonderful city illuminated for its annual festival of light. It’s nightly so there’s no excuse to miss it.

Jun 1-5, 2022: Voiles d’Antibes on the Côte d’Azur is the start of the famous seaborne Mediterranean circuit races, when those beautiful rare, vintage and classic yachts unfurl their sails and race through the water.
Jun 1-Sept 30, 2022: La Gacilly Photo Festival is a wonderful outdoor photo festival. For three months, hundreds of large format photos are displayed in the parks, green maze, squares and streets of the small town in Morbihan, Brittany. This year’s theme is Visions d’Orient.
Jun 2-26, 2022: Festival de musique de Sully et du Loiret. Held in the delightful Loire Valley, the festival has been running since 1973. It presents a mix of classical and jazz in the famous chateau and other local heritage buildings.

Jun 3-5, 2022: Rendez-vous aux Jardins. This year’s theme is appropriately, Gardens in the Face of Climate Change. It takes place throughout France with around 2,400 public and private gardens opening up to the public (like the Chateau de Valmer below). The emphasis is on changes in plants, the seasons, early flowering and more. You can talk to the gardeners about the challenges and how they have adapted their gardens. You’ll also find guided tours, demonstrations on plants, exhibitions, musical walks, games and more.
Jun 3-5, 2022: Salon Vivre Côté Sud in Aix-en-Provence is a must if you’re interested in interior design. It’s organised by the Maisons Côté Sud magazine and offers a top view of living in the south of France. Very seductive!
Jun 6, 2022: Annual Transhumance. St Rémy de Provence is famous for its transhumance when hundreds of sheep are driven through the town to begin their journey up to the pastures to grow fat and happy during the summer months. They leave from the Plateau de la Crau at 10.30am for a couple of circuits of the town, then leave for the real thing in the afternoon.
It’s not just the sheep which get excited about the event. There’s an antiques fair, an exhibition of bells, painting competition, cheese fair and sales of posters and raffle tickets.
Jun 6-Jul 3, 2022: The Anjou Festival now in its 72nd season has become the second biggest outdoor theatre event in France. The festival presents a varied programme in historic venues.
Jun 10-12, 2022: 24 Hours of Le Mans race, near Le Mans in the Loire Valley, is one of the most famous car races in the world. It has an intriguing history, beginning in its present form in 1923. It covers a road circuit of just over 8 miles (13kms) in Le Mans, part of which is on a public road.

Jun 13-18, 2022: International Animated Film Festival in Annecy, Haute-Savoie. Taking place here since 1960, the international festival shows over 200 films from around the world. There are premières at different venues, exhibitions and more, plus nightly free outdoor screenings on Le Pâquier field.
Jun 15-19, 2022: Festival du Film de Cabourg. Every summer, the delightful Normandy town of Cabourg holds a great film festival dedicated to romantic film. It’s a packed program of premières, tributes and retrospectives, lectures, debates and meetings, all open to the public.
There’s also an outdoor cinema with 400 seats set up on the beach.
Isabelle Adjani, Jacques Audiard, Charles Berling, Marion Cotillard, Catherine Deneuve, Émilie Dequenne, Amira Casar, Sophie Marceau and others have attended the event. At the end of the competition, the Swann d’Or awards are given to the best feature-length films, best short film, best actress and best actor.
Jun 17-Jul 22, 2022: Festival de Nîmes in Occitanie. Music festival with a big line up includes Deep Purple, Sting, Nightwish and many more. It’s been happening since 1997.
Jun 17-Jul 3, 2022: Montpellier Dance. Since 1981 the city of Montpellier has put on the contemporary dance festival with over 50 shows. It takes place in different buildings around the city. Most are at the Agora, a building devoted to dance. The programme also includes film screenings, round table talks, exhibitions and special meetings with the artists.
Jun 17-26, 2022: Hellfest in Clisson, Loire-Atlantique. Founded in 2006 it is a top festival of hard rock, gothic rock, heavy metal, black metal and hardcore punk. Seven stages for the biggest names from Guns’n’Roses to Iron Maiden, Kiss to Deep Purple, Alice Cooper and many more. Not everyone goes in the gear you’d expect: Festival-goers appear as pink rabbits, Gauls and Teletubbies. Entertainment includes dance shows with flaming jets while the young can skate in a park shaped like a giant coffin.
BUT 2022 is sold out as the festival was cancelled last year and ticket holders could transfer their tickets to 2022.
Jun 20-Aug 6, 2022: Chorégies d’Orange started in 1869, making it the oldest festival in France. It’s held in the magnificent Roman Théâtre Antique, which seats 8,600 people, has superb acoustics and puts on popular operas and classical music.
Jun 21, 2022: World Music Day (concerts and dancing in the streets throughout France). It began in 1982 and has blossomed since then. Everyone participates so there’s an enormous variety of music from contemporary to folk as the music schools, conservatories, museums, hospitals, radio, concert halls, cafés, street performers and more put on their own versions.
Jun 25,26, 2022: Medieval Festival de Provins. This UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Seine-et-Marne near Paris is an exceptionally well preserved fortified medieval city. It’s the perfect setting for their annual Medieval Fair with swashbuckling galore, sinister characters along with musicians, stilt walkers and entertainers. There are camps, craftspeople making and selling jewellery, spices, fabrics and costumes from the distant past. And it’s great for children. This year’s theme is The Builders.

Jun 24-26, 2022: Nature is Bike, Angers, Loire Valley. This is the first festival dedicated to gravel bikes. It’s a sporting event but is aimed at reconnecting with nature, involving families, professionals and enthusiasts. There are two events: a 64km night ride and a 100km daytime course. There’s also a family ramble, a ‘Gravel Expo’ trade fair and environment-focused events. Angers is a major cycling centre, located where three major cycling routes cross. The town is well known for its extraordinary historic and contemporary tapestries.
There’s a new route between Arromanches-les-Bains and Angers. All in all it makes for 300 kms/186 miles of ultra-distance cycling.
Jun 29-Jul 13, 2022: Jazz à Vienne, Isère. Great names lined up for this annual popular jazz festival. Jamie Cullum, Ibrahim Maalouf, Anne Paceo and many more are on the billing. Over 200,000 people descend on the city to see the performances on four stages. Isère is a fabulous place to visit (there’s more on Isèrere here).
