The Final of the Tour de France 2021

So we’re now at the end of the race as the riders sweep down the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

The winner of last year’s Tour, Tadej Pogačar, is at the front by over 5 minutes and wearing the yellow jersey once again. He will wear it on Sunday, the final day, and also the Polk Dot jersey. He increased his lead over the next nine riders by minutes.

The great sprinter, Mark Cavendish, took his 34^th tour win in the Tour de France on Day 13, Friday July 9. It equals the 34 wins of the Belgian legend, Eddie Merckx. But although he won the overall Green Jersey, he came third in the final sprint of the race.

The first chart underneath shows the day’s race, which throws up different cyclists as leaders. It was won by the powerful and young Wout van Aert for the second day running.

The Tour de France Jerseys

The Yellow Jersey (maillot jaune) is the overall winner of the race up to that point, awarded after each stage.
The Green Jersey is for the best sprinter. Points are awarded at the finish of each stage, and for an intermediate sprint in all normal stages.
The Red Polka Dot Jersey is for the best climber. Points are awarded at the summit of each hill and mountain and at altitude finishes.
The White Jersey is the best young rider (for riders who are no more than 25 years old in the year of the race).
The Red and White Stripe Jersey is for the most aggressive rider which is awarded at the end of each stage by cycling specialists.

Tour de France 2021 Latest daily updates: Cyclists who have left the race

OTL = Outside time limit. rider failed to finish within a specified time behind the race winner (usually defined as a percentage of the winner’s time)

It’s been a brutal Tour de France, with a major crash early on the first day caused by a spectator holding up a cardboard message to her grandparents and looking the wrong way. That was followed by another crash on day 1 and since then it’s been extraordinarily dangerous with some of the greatest names and hopes in the race having to retire.

More than the usual number of cyclists had to leave the race being outside the time limit. The current leader Tadej Pogačar is extraordinarily fast and with other dominant cyclists has been changing the way the Tour de France is run. Here’s the list of all 40 withdrawals.
